According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 73.8 million adults in the United States had either a mental illness or substance use disorder.

21.0% of adults aged 18 or older (or 52.9 million people in the U.S.) struggled with mental illness and 5.6% (or 14.2 million people) experienced serious mental illness in the past year. An estimated 6.7% of adults aged 18 or older (or 17.0 million people) had co-occurring mental illness and a substance use disorder, and 2.2% (or 5.7 million people) had co-occurring serious mental illness and a substance use disorder.

However, less than half of those with mental health difficulties (46.2 %) received mental health services.

Approximately 10 percent of the over 40.3 million Americans who need treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) receive it.
